Joy – Trailer Release

In 2012 we were given Silver Linings Playbook, in 2013 it was American Hustle from the great band that is Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro and David O. Russell at the helm, a combination that worked so well the first time around, and not so well the second. Then in 2014 we got a solo Cooper/Lawrence outing with Serena, which although it had its decent moments was not a film to which I can start singing its praises, but now the old band is back together again and looking to make another hit.

Joy is the story of Joy Mangano, the woman who gave the world the “miracle mop”, which to Brits like me will not always ring a bell straight away, if so google and then come back…with me? Okay good. From what we see in this first trailer there is much more going on than simply cleaning products, we have the story of a woman trying to have it all; love, marriage, a family, and a successful career at a time where the world didn’t always make it easy for a woman to succeed outside of the home. It’s a story with some heart and soul, characters you can root for and who can break your heart while (assuming from what happened in real life) giving us that underdog finally wins ending that we love to see so much.

When the trailer emerged for American Hustle it seemed like we had a hit on our hands until it finally reached the cinemas, so I’m hesitant to be too hopeful for this one to be another gem like Silver Linings, but it’s all about the story and this one has serious potential. The trailer shows us the kind of story where you have to go through some hard times to get to the great times, and hopefully that’s the case for David O. Russell and the gang and this one will be a smash, with a little help from Orange Is The New Black star Dascha Polanco, and Édgar Ramirez (Wrath of The Titans, Bourne Ultimatum). Realistically who can say no to a film about a smart, strong and determined woman who isn’t going to let anyone get in her way?
