Directed by Andrew Klaus-Vineyard and Daniel Talbott, at the long-standing Palm Springs gay bar Tool Shed, a desert oasis for leather-loving, sex-positive seniors, a generation who once faced the HIV/AIDS epidemic and decades of oppression find themselves trailblazers again as the first openly LGBTQ+ seniors.
First and foremost, it’s both a joy and a necessity to capture the older generations speaking to the queer experience, and the hard fought battle for equality. That’s something which has always been important, but it feels never more important than today. Welcome to Tool Shed serves as a reminder of how the current political climate in the US is attempting to roll back progress and actively discriminate against the LGBTQIA+ community. That’s a heavy task to take on for a short film but Andrew Klaus-Vineyard and Daniel Talbott picked the perfect vehicle to get the job done, celebrating the Tool Shed.
There’s a great deal explored within the twenty-three minutes of Welcome to Tool Shed; looking back to the past both in its wins and losses, looking tentatively and apprehensively towards the future, and capturing the importance of creating safe, queer spaces, and it’s well balanced. The filmmakers did a great job of blending those different themes together in a way that’s complementary and builds upon itself to tell the story of the bigger picture. Part of that is the excellent editing work which creates a compelling flow and intimacy to the short.
The style which Klaus-Vineyard and Talbott bring to Welcome to Tool Shed is pensive, friendly and wholesome. You’re hit with that welcoming tone as soon as you enter the film, and it continues all throughout. There’s a wonderfully keen focus on community, in the sense of supporting one another and also in respecting those we have lost. There’s a great deal of sincere emotion, it’s vulnerable yet stalwart.
In spite of the very necessary highlighting of the horrific losses at the hands of the AIDS crisis and the uncertain future which lies ahead, Welcome to Tool Shed holds onto a sense of hope. That hope lies within its belief in the power of community, of different generations supporting one another, of passing on the fight for equality to the queer youth of today. Andrew Klaus-Vineyard and Daniel Talbott manage to both deliver a poignant reminder of what is harrowingly at stake in the US for the queer community, and pay homage to an institution which has celebrated and comforted the community for generations.

I would throw in Harry Dodge and Silas Howard’s By Hook or by Crook and Juliet Bashore’s Kamikaze Hearts, two films that I discovered on re-release, which demonstrates why it’s so important to not just keep making new queer work but to also give viewers more opportunities to see the work which paved the way for those new films, something this documentary also nicely highlights.
