Written and directed by Will Pruitt, co-directed by Jackson Pruitt, an ancient, decrepit man (Lamonte Goode) wakes up from a prolonged period of stagnation. He rises, worn and weary, and sets to the task of reclaiming his vigour and vitality.
Sometimes a film will pluck at your curiosity and immediately pull you into its world, and Stiff is one of those films. As soon as it opens the level of detail and the richness to its aesthetic make you want more. Its quality is exceptional and a joy to watch unfold, then as it moves it builds a wonderfully strong, artistic atmosphere. It has a haunting edge and yet is not necessarily dark, it walks the line between an overture of death and a celebration of life.
That’s one of the greatest things about Stiff, its ability to shift tones and evolve in a really entertaining way. It’s constantly adding to itself and with the help of some strong editing work (also by Will Pruitt), it’s able to create these fantastic and surprising comedy notes. The filmmakers give the film thoughtful layers in an exploration of wanting to give up versus pushing through the difficult moments. It moves in an unexpected way, translating its themes through movement while remaining accessible.
Lamonte Goode manages to give a performance that’s silent yet says plenty. His progression perfectly interprets the themes at work and it’s effortless to follow. Especially when it’s combined with such a superb score, that helps to elevate the emotions at work. Going from that initial place of darkness and struggle to something joyful. It’s also supported by some incredible make-up work which only makes the aesthetic even stronger.
Stiff is impeccably shot and holds a stunning level of detail that you simply can’t take your eyes off of. Lamonte Goode gives a beautiful portrayal of using movement to translate everyday themes into art, which is so brilliantly framed by the direction, score, set design and make-up work. Every element that Will Pruitt and Jackson Pruitt put into this film is thoughtful and filled with talent. It’s delightfully unexpected to find such an imaginative interpretation of something we all struggle with day to day, finding the drive and motivation to keep pushing forward.

Congratulations Jackson and Will!
