Written and directed by Danny Gibbons, in what seems like just another late night taxi fare, this particular journey and passenger will ultimately change the course of Rene’s life forever. Starring: India Brown and Jay Simpson.
A hugely impactful choice that any short film can make is for filmmakers to predict the first impressions their audience will have and use it against them. Danny Gibbons gives us a fantastic example of that with Sherbet, it plays with your perception of these characters in such a thoughtfully deceptive way. It’s a great lesson on not making quick assumptions, then as it progresses, it blossoms into a poignant and touching journey.
The connection that India Brown and Jay Simpson gradually built between these perfect strangers is genuinely impressive. It’s utterly natural, moving and strikes right at your heart. Brown gives us this bubbly, unstoppable force before opening up such a compelling vulnerability. Whereas while Simson’s Rene starts out as defensive and apathetic, then evolves into a truly kind presence. The two of them together create an atmosphere that’s emotionally charged and warm yet funny. The way that they interact is such a perfect example of the importance of empathy.
Setting your entire story in a car is a fun challenge for any filmmaker, giving it movement and space or stopping it from becoming stilted and Gibbons perfectly rises to that challenge. His direction is very much enhanced by the cinematography from Tom French, it’s sharp and deeply contrasted to get that late night, isolated feel. The two work together to create a captivating atmosphere and smoothly flowing story, also helped by Saleh Nass’ editing. There’s something to it that’s reminiscent of 2013’s Locke, the colouring and the way it holds your attention, but in this case with a personal connection rather than imploding family strife.
Sherbet is skilfully and thoughtfully shot, a highly memorable and moving short. It really ticks all the boxes across directing, writing, cinematography, editing and performances, there’s no weak link. India Brown and Jay Simpson are wonderful to watch, the poignancy between them is excellent. It’s a meaningful story with a very wholesome message to impart.
