Admittedly I am not a Ben Wheatley fan and do not expect to be any time soon, for a man who most claim is near to the top with British directing and films, I wholeheartedly disagree; but I am still willing to give him a chance to turn it around. His new film, High Rise starring Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons and Sienna Miller is the story of residents in a tower block whose life is suddenly about to get much more messy.
While I will not say that this trailer puts me off watching the film, it certainly doesn’t, I think making a film that isn’t an original story of his, may push Wheatley to make more coherent films, but it still feels like one that will make very little sense (although the script is still written by his wife and long time collaborator, Amy Jump). The problem with a film where things descend into chaos is often that’s all they become, just a couple hours of chaos with no connection or meaning. At this point it can’t be judged whether this one will fall into that trap but my expectations are low, so I’m hoping to be pleasantly surprised.
